2nd Annual Artist Towel Series 2008 Limited-Edition Towels by Jeff Koons, Elizabeth Peyton, Cindy Sherman and Kehinde Wiley to Premiere at Art Basel Miami
Target® is proud to once again be partnering with Art Production Fund [APF] to sponsor the Artist Towel Series 2008. The series is part of the second annual WOW (Works on Whatever), a unique collection of everyday items designed by artists to bring art off the walls and into homes. This years series features four 60x70 inch cotton towels designed by acclaimed artists Jeff Koons, Elizabeth Peyton, Cindy Sherman and Kehinde Wiley.
Artist Towel Series 2008 are the official pool towels for Andre Balazas Raleigh hotel, during Art Basel Miami 2007. Towels will be available for sale at Target.com, as well as at select locations at Art Basel Miami. Towels retail for $50 and the revenue from sales will support APFs mission to introduce contemporary art to a larger community and to help fund additional major civic artwork projects.
“Art Production Fund is excited to partner with Target for the second year to extend the exposure of these great contemporary artists to audiences who may not otherwise see their work, said Yvonne Force and Doreen Remen, Co-Founders. “The towel series makes it easier for public audiences with an interest in art to get their hands on exclusive products designed by renowned artists.
Artist Backgrounds Jeff Koons captivates and inspires audiences with paintings and sculptures that bring the mundane into high culture. A clear example is the inflatable monkey toy that dominates his towel. Half of the proceeds generated from sales of this towel support the Koons Family Institute, a resource of the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children.
Elizabeth Peyton is a contemporary portrait artist who uses both intense color and monochrome to give life and depth to historical figures as well as pop culture icons and close friends. Her towel features a charcoal sketch of the legendary Sid Vicious.
Cindy Shermans work is primarily made up of photographs she has taken of herself in roles ranging from B-movie starlets to historical portrait sitters where she explores a wide range of female identities. Her towel is based on a photograph of herself as a woman who finds herself floating in a suburban pool.
Kehinde Wiley fuses contemporary hip hop culture with classic Renaissance portraiture. His distinct style is captured in his towel with an elaborately patterned background and ornate gold frame surrounding a young urban subject.
